Attenting Guerilla Drive-In would be a cool way to pass a lazy summer after noon. These articles discuss a growing fad in which groups of people gather in (semi-)public spaces to watch movies. The improvements in projector technologies and the reduction in price has made it possible to put together a do-it-yourself outdoor theater for not much over $1000. The group primarilly mentioned in the article has information up about their operation and even has a page about how to start your own. They currently pay no royalties for the exhibited movies, but charge no admission (which apparently is still against the copyright.) Their other issue (which is specific to that and possibly other areas) is the closure of public parks/places at dark. They often use other properties, without permission, but haven’t run into any problems doing so.
This sounds like a really cool idea, in fact i’m half tempted to try to get something like this started. The only sticking point would be the projector. I don’t really feel like ploping down $1000 bucks on one. I know a couple of people that i could probably get interested in the idea. I think if i was to try and do it i would try to do it around UK. We shall see, I dobut i’ll follow through on the idea, but it would be cool if i did.
