3 tips for housing energy storage projects effectively

Properly designed battery energy storage systems are safe, reliable and capable of withstanding the extremes of demanding environments and multiple use modes. Tier 1 systems are engineered with precision using quality components and workmanship in order to operate reliably for at least 15 years based on commonly accepted industry maintenance practices. Owner-operators considering an investment in battery energy storage should select a supplier that can deliver completely integrated system solutions that blend the technical requirement into a long-lasting, serviceable architecture. 

Many aspects must be analyzed when considering a battery energy storage system. In addition to meeting the customer's technical and financial requirements the system must be designed in a serviceable, sustainable manner. The following topics serve as starting points from which you may launch into deeper research and conversations with solutions providers.

1. Keep computing in mind
Battery energy storage systems continuously meter, process and output tremendous amounts of external and internal data in real time. The input data, process response time and corresponding output signals determine how effectively it will support the electric power system (EPS). A properly designed system considers the technical, physical and cyber requirements of the control & automation (C&A) scheme and seamlessly integrates computing power into the system's physical architecture. A supplier with demonstrated expertise in system controls can achieve this level of integration and deliver a C&A system that is sustainable throughout its service life.  

2. Understand the connection point
Some of the basics under this topic may be obvious and include such things as site selection, accessibility, security, the ratings and capacity of existing/available infrastructure, the condition of existing equipment and apparatus, etc. In addition to having the expertise to support analysis of these 'basics', the energy storage technology supplier should be able to provide the same level of expertise respective to how the system will perform at the proposed EPS node. In other words, given the customer's needs and known grid characteristics, will the customer derive the maximum technical and financial benefits from the proposed system at the proposed location?

Tier 1 energy storage integrators should possess broad in-house expertise, established industry partnerships and the financial stability necessary to assume project level responsibility across the entire range of energy storage applications. A properly structured turnkey agreement ensures that all the technical 'basics' are thoroughly analyzed from the customer's initial technical specification to the details not included that only experience can catch. A properly structured turnkey project should include appropriate service and maintenance plans and energy assurance agreements that ensure the owner-operator's benefits.
